mandy

This little firecracker of a cat came to us in a somewhat unconventional way.

There is a lady who lives down the lane named Irene. Irene spends her summers here in Meadowville and the winter months in her New Glasgow apartment. Last Fall, as she was getting ready to move back into town, Mandy showed up at her doorstep with a belly full of kittens. She stole Irene’s heart immediately and she resolved to find Mandy a proper home. Irene’s first step was to take Mandy to the local SPCA. While they were able to take and find homes for all of Mandy’s kittens, they couldn’t take Mandy herself. Irene worked tirelessly to find Mandy’s human match but to no avail.

Then one day, when Dave was walking by Irene’s house, she waved him over. “Do you happen to have a small corner of your barn for this little cat?” She went on to explain the situation and finished up by saying, “I can’t help the war in Syria but I can help this little cat.”

Well, what can you say to that?! A few hours later, Mandy moved up the lane to our house. We welcomed her inside, offered her snuggly mats and bowls overflowing with food. We petted her and she purred. But no matter how hard we try to entice her, Mandy prefers to stay outside. So now we say we have two and a half cats: ButterCat, Nugget and Mandy the Deck Cat. She perches on the railing, under the stairs, or waits at the threshold of the door and arches her back for a scratch when we go in and out, but outside she remains.

Despite her quirks and funny habits, sweet Mandy has captured our hearts. Dave calls her the farm supervisor because she follows him everywhere he goes. But stop for a moment and she’ll be figure-eighting her way around your legs, looking for some love. Mandy might choose to stay outside but we had no choice – she’s firmly planted in our hearts now.
